Michael Smerconish recently interviewed two men who talked about the influence of media on the polarization of our country. It is significant in my opinion and has made compromise and governance nearly impossible in this country.
So when I think about who do I turn to for unbiased, non-prejucidied news, I think about investigative journalism. I was first exposed to this field when I read Greg Palast’s great books about the influence of dark money in politics (Billionaries and Bandits, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy). With news media being “propagandized” and “corporatized,” it’s more important than ever in my opinion to support investigative journalism outlets. They are now the best sources for reading real fact-based information, not tainted by political forces or profit-generating goals. My favorite (and one that I support with my dollars) is The Center for Public Integrity. They were the ones who released the information on the Panama Papers that outed a number of world leaders and companies with secret offshore accounts based in Panama (Iceland’s leader was forced to resign based on that reveal) and is doing a great series on the outsized impact of fossil fuels and related companies on the fabric of American life in its series “Carbon Wars,” which I read often. I highly encourage you – if you are wanting to support the best means for unbiased journalism – to support outfits like CPI.
