This strategy seems like one that the delivery companies (Amazon, FedEx, UPS, etc…) could bank on. Inter-city driving – keep the human drivers. Intracity driving – time to look at autonomous vehicles. This balance between the human and the automated car has and will continue to be the question that private and public sector early users of AVs will think about.
“FedEx chief executive Fred Smith said…that the company will make big strides in its autonomous vehicle efforts this summer. ‘You’ll see in late June an enormous effort towards autonomous trucks that move over the highway. Not in the city, where we think our drivers are better for the pickup and delivery of the long-distance vehicles.’
